Kilter Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy, Sports Performance & Pain Management in Scotland

Hypnotherapy for Sports Performance and Pain Management

If you’re an athlete finding you can’t quite reach the PBs you’re aiming for, or can’t perform at competition as well as you want, hypnotherapy can help. Whether the barrier is pain, anxiety, consistency or something else, hypnotherapy is a tool that can helps you perform at your best.

Hypnotherapy can help athletes overcome performance anxiety, improve confidence and self-efficacy and improve their performance in and out of competitions.

Hypnotherapy also works incredibly effectively for pain management. It can help change, reduce or even disappear feelings of pain in the moment, and longer term can work on negative thoughts and behaviours that keep us in pain.

Working at the intersection of sports performance and pain, I work with athletes who experience pain to help them manage pain and improve their sports performance.

About Me

My name is Kirsty (they/them). I’m from Scotland but have spent much of my life moving around and have lived in France, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar and Colombia. I spent 11 years as a primary teacher in Scotland and abroad before training as a hypnotherapist.

I discovered hypnotherapy after I suffered from nociplastic/chronic pain myself, and my mum sent me a Guardian article about hypnotherapy so I thought I would give it a go! I know what it’s like to have your body limit what you love to do. Hypnotherapy gave me my life back; and now it’s the tool I use to help athletes get theirs back too.

Sports Performance Hypnotherapy

Sports Performance Hypnotherapy at Kilter Hypnotherapy has four strands:

  1. Hypnotherapy works with suggestions, imagery and mindset to help athletes achieve flow-state, overcome anxiety and perform at their best.
  2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps athletes define goals, identify barriers, and rewire the thought patterns that sabotage your training and competition day performance.
  3. Somatics is a kind of embodied therapy that works with our nervous system to help us stay regulated – even in high-stakes moments.
  4. Mindfulness helps athletes stay locked in and razor-focused when it matters most.

The blend of these four elements can help you to achieve your best.

Pain Management Hypnotherapy

Athletes experience pain for many reasons. Pain is a part of training hard, when muscles, ligaments, tendons and more are pushed to their limits. Disabled athletes may experience pain as a part of their disability.

Many athletes who push themselves develop nociplastic/chronic pain when their nervous system keeps pain going even after an injury heals. Because different athletes experience pain differently and for different reasons, they have different goals for hypnotherapy:

  • Improve recovery time so you can get back to training faster
  • Reduce pain during training so you can focus on your performance
  • Manage hospital visits, check-ups and other situations with less stress
  • In the case of chronic pain, completely get rid of the pain – for good.

No matter the reason you experience pain, Pain Management Hypnotherapy at Kilter Hypnotherapy can help you. Just like Sports Performance Hypnotherapy it four strands:

  1. Hypnotherapy works with suggestions, imagery and mindset to give you control over the experience of pain in the moment. In hypnosis we can change, reduce and even get rid of felt pain. Longer-term, hypnotherapy also helps with positive lifestyle changes that make living with pain better or help to stop the experience of pain if it is nociplastic.
  2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps identify the thought patterns and behaviours that are holding you back and keeping you in pain.
  3. Somatics is a kind of embodied therapy that works with our nervous system to help us stay regulated. Pain is a fear response in the body, and staying regulated reduces pain.
  4. Mindfulness helps us to stay present, connected and embodied even through pain.

The blend of these four elements can give you freedom from pain.
